What Kind of Church is Ferris?
The Christian Churches and Churches of Christ began as a religious movement of American churches in the 1800’s. This movement is often called the Restoration Movement. Leaders of this movement came from various church backgrounds such as Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist. They were all frustrated with the division they had seen and experienced in the church. They had a simple plan: They believed that if they followed the Bible only, they would produce Christians only. They did not claim to be the only Christians, but wanted to be Christians only. They believed that wearing a denominational name was unnecessary and even harmful to the unity that Jesus desired for His Church. (John 17:20,21) Today, there are three main branches of this movement: The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); The Church of Christ (non-instrumental); and our branch of the movement, which is usually referred to as either Christian Church or Church of Christ. In the US, there are nearly 6,000 congregations associated with the Christian Church/Church of Christ branch of this movement. Our fellowship of churches has been very active in mission outreach, with about 10,000 churches outside the US associated with the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ.
